A Christmas Celebration
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright stages a holiday musical
Paula Vogel’s A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration

It’s Christmas Eve, 1864, and Washington D.C. is experiencing the coldest Christmas Eve in memory. President and Mrs. Lincoln are planning the holiday in the White House, a young rebel clashes with a Union blacksmith on the icy banks of the Potomac and an escaped slave is trolling the downtown alleys, distraught over the split with her daughter just before finding freedom.
These lives have seemingly little in common, but Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel weaves their stories into a celebration of life in her heartwarming musical A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration set to debut at the Boston University Theatre from November 13 through December 13, 2009.
In A Civil War Christmas, Vogel uses traditional Christmas and American songs to show how a young nation filled with war rises above the turmoil to find peace during the holiday season. The story, along with its message of love and understanding, captured the hearts of audiences after its debut in 2008. A Civil War Christmas was inspired by Vogel’s childhood growing up in the legacy of the Civil War in Maryland. Years later, she set out to develop a musical that incorporated the rich history and music of the United States with the larger themes of race, inclusiveness, freedom and forgiveness.
A Civil War Christmas will also feature local choirs performing traditional holiday music before each performance. Learn more about the musical, find show times and purchase tickets by contacting the Boston University Theatre box office at 617-266-0800 or by visiting www.huntingtontheatre.org.
