Shakespeare’s work has been mastered and re–mastered time and again, often in shocking and exciting ways. American Reparatory Theater’s presentation of The Donkey Show

The play, which enjoyed a six–year run in New York City and worldwide tour that took it from London to Seoul, found a fitting home in Boston and A.R.T.’s newly refurbished club Oberon. The story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is told using 1970’s classic such as “We are Family,” “I Love the Nightlife,” “Car Wash,“ “Ring My Bell,” and “Last Dance.” The enchanted forest of Shakespeare’s classic comedy becomes the glittered world of retro disco as the lovers escape from their real lives to experience a night of dream, abandon, and fantasy. Bawdy and beautiful, the show is a rejuvenating change to Boston theater that has set theater–goers’ hearts ablaze with its dance beats and bright stage.

The Donkey Show kicked off A.R.T.’s Shakespeare Exploded! Festival, which has sought to present three Shakespearean classics through new, inventive lenses. Donkey’s Studio 54 vibe blends perfectly with the tone and story of A Midsummer Night&rsqup;s Dream and this disco–trip is sure to make you look at Shakespeare in a way you never have before.
