The Sparrow Takes Flight
Supernatural play staged at Stoneham
| | More
Imagining the scope and landscape of a play that involves superheroes and supernatural powers is beyond most people’s conception. The beauty of the stage is that it allows truly inventive imagination—the kind of creativity that can turn plain wood floorboards into a ship in the South Pacific or an imaginary land of witches.
This fall, the Stoneham Theater will present The Sparrow, a play that blends the everyday life of an American teenager with the fantastic superpowers found on the pages of comic books or the big screens of movie theaters. Having previously premiered in Chicago to rave reviews, The Sparrow comes to Boston at the helm of original director Nathan Allen. The story follows Emily Book, an orphaned teenager who returns to her hometown for her senior year of high school. But Emily is different. She may seem like an ordinary teenager but within her she holds extraordinary powers. Powers that will reveal clues to her past; powers that must be kept secret.
In order to stage the cinematic piece, Allen presented “a spectacle of movement and objects.” He states that “there’s a beautiful score and a lot of movement used to create imaginative space. In one moment you’ll be in the classroom and then suddenly you’ll be on a train as it’s crashing. In a movie, this is normal, but on stage we don’t often see this fluidity of scale and setting.”
The Sparrow runs Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, November 8. Tickets are $44 or $38 for adults, and student and senior discounts are available. Stoneham Theatre is located at 395 Main Street in Stoneham.
