Ceramic art has evolved over the last century from its traditional utilitarian roots to respected works of art. Master ceramic artist Warren MacKenzie is widely credited for this shift and pieces representing his incredible 50-year career are on display now at Fuller Craft Museum.

Warren MacKenzie: Legacy of an American Potter is on exhibition until January 18, 2010 and includes over 200 seminal works he created between 1948 and 2006. The works represent various styles, forms and approaches to the art of clay and undoubtedly sheds new light on the life and work of one of America’s foremost studio potters.

Born in 1924 in Kansas City, Mo., MacKenzie studied ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduation in 1948, he moved to Minnesota where he taught ceramics, sculpture and design at the university level for the St. Paul Gallery and School of Art and the University of Minnesota. He later chaired the Department of Studio Arts at the University of Minnesota until his retirement in 1990.

Today, 85-year-old MacKenzie continues to create new art in his Minnesota studio. His traditional, wheel-thrown stoneware pieces fuse the influences of Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi, but also include his own unique vision where art and life work together as one. Warren MacKenzie: Legacy of an American Potter gives art lovers a glimpse into the life and work of this master artist and will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of artists.

Warren MacKenzie: Legacy of an American Potter is on display until January 18, 2010 at Fuller Craft Museum, 455 Oak St., Brockton, Mass. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. -5 p.m. with free admission for all Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. Admission is $8 adults, $5 seniors and students, free for members and children 12 or under.
