Bollywood is coming to Boston. As part of the First Night festivities, “Bombay Cinema” will present the best in Bollywood films. This is a one-time opportunity for residents to enjoy selections from an entire day of the best that Indian cinema has to offer.
Highlights from “Bombay Cinema” include the 2001 release Zubeidaa. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and won Karisma Kapoor a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics’). Centering on a son’s search for answers from his mother’s past, it intertwines personal memory, Indian film history and political intrigue to create a story that questions the purpose and practice of familial resolution. The film will be shown 12:30–3:00 pm December 31, 2009.
Also featured is Lago Raho Munna Bhai, a film as influential politically as it is entertaining. Musical comedy in genre, Lago Raho Munna Bhai follows a man in his quest to find true love. What he gets along the way is an ideological transformation that impacts everyone around him, as he begins to interact with the spirit of Gandhi. Most interesting about Lago Raho Munna Bhai is its reception in India and abroad. The film sparked a renewed interest in Gandhism, a movement that transformed into “Gandhigiri”, the concept discussed and practiced by the main character in the film. Inspired by Lago Raho Munna Bhai, several Gandhigiri protests took place in India and the United States after the release of the film, and it was even the first Hindi film to be shown at the United Nations, causing uproarious applause and igniting passionate discussion. The film will be shown 3:00–5:30 pm, December 31, 2009.
All screenings for “Bombay Cinema” will be shown at the Hynes Convention Center, Room 311. For a full listing of films and more information on First Night festivities, please visit www.firstnight.org.
