Yo-Yo Ma with BSO

Classical music isn’t exactly tantamount to superstardom. Bows and resin rarely amount to hordes of fans. But Yo-Yo Ma breaks these molds. One would be hard-pressed to find another classical musician playing today who enjoys the notoriety with which Ma has been blessed—and for good reason. One of the finest cellists working today, Ma has won multiple Grammys and enjoyed unparalleled chart success—he has had as many as four separate albums on the Billboard Classical charts at one time. January 6–9 and 12, 2010, Ma will join the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Ton Hoopman for a presentation of Hadyn, Bach and Schubert.

The concert series will feature music by these three classical master composers. Ma is soloist in Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C. Along with the Concerto, the Orchestra will be playing Haydn’s Symphony No. 98, one of the twelve symphonic masterpieces he wrote for adoring London audiences during two visits there in the first half of the 1790’s. Hadyn, Bach and Shubert refers to C.P.E. Bach, one of the most accomplished sons of J.S. Bach, who himself helped to originate the symphony. The Orchestra will be playing his Symphony in G. The last of the presented compositions is Schubert’s haunting Unfinished Symphony, begun about 1822 but abandoned by the composer after two movements were completed.

Pre-talks, sponsored by New England Coffee, will be given before each performance and will feature a different speaker each performance date. They are free with the purchase of a ticket. For more information on Hadyn, Bach and Shubert or to purchase a ticket, please visit www.bso.org.
