To be one of the best in the world in your field is a feat that few will achieve. When you are a classical pianist, this distinction is even more remarkable. With the precision of a surgeon and artistry of a painter, Emanuel Ax has built a reputation as one of the best musicians of our time. For one night only, the Celebrity Series of Boston will present Emanuel Ax in recital on Friday, January 8 at 8pm at NEC’s Jordan Hall.

Ax first performed at the Celebrity Series in 1980 as part of a piano trio with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Young-Uck Kim and has appeared nine times since throughout the years. Born in Lvov, Poland, Ax began learning piano at the age of six under the tutelage of his father, studied at Julliard and later, Columbia. He won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1973 and has been performing all over the world ever since. His album work for Sony Classical Recordings has earned him seven Grammy awards and he is widely regarded as one of the best pianists in existence.

For the January 8 Celebrity Series of Boston concert, Emanuel Ax will perform the works of classical composers Chopin and Schumann, a divergence from his recent attention toward contemporary composers. Selections include, Chopin’s Polonaise-fantaisie in A-flat Major and Grande polonaise, Opus 22 and Phantasie in C Major, Opus 17 by Schumann.

Remaining tickets for Emanuel Ax are priced at $45, and are available by calling CelebrityCharge at (617) 482-6661 Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., online at www.celebrityseries.org, or at the Jordan Hall box office, 30 Gainsborough Street, Boston.
