At some point in our adult lives we cast aside the frivolous playthings of our youth and embark on a journey into the grownup world—or so goes conventional wisdom. But what if these playthings (or people) were never cast aside? What if the life of the party, the guy who encouraged every activity you thought would never coalesce with neckties and mortgages actually stuck around? Fabuloso, A Play by John Kolvenbach premieres at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre January 7, 2010 and continues through the end of the month.
Fabuloso finds an ordinary couple, Teddy (Jeremiah Wiggins) and Kate (Rebecca Harris) living a ho-hum existence in their one-bedroom apartment. Their world is turned upside down when Teddy’s old friend Arthur (Ed Jewett) shows up with fiancĂ©e Samantha (Amy Kim Waschke). Filled with laughs, Fabuloso tackles the ever-present topic of what could have been and what still can be.
Kyle Fabel directs the play in his third directorial run at the Merrimack. On Fabuloso Fabel says, “As a director, I’m often asked to find plays that have two elusive qualities: humor and heart. In a time when a huge majority of good new scripts are dark comedies, it’s particularly hard to find a play that incorporates both of these assets. Fabuloso is that rare play. It made me laugh out loud. John Kolvenbach is writing the best new American comedies.”
Fabuloso will appear at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre January 7–31, 2010. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.merrimackrep.org.
