I dare you to hear “Dancing Queen” without singing along. Whether we like it or not, the music of ABBA has permeated our cultural landscape, turning the once saccharine disco-pop beats of Sweden’s most successful export into a multimillion dollar kitsch fund for the 21st century. After the music of ABBA appeared in several successful films, Mamma Mia!, the musical using ABBA’s music to weave an original tale, premiered on Broadway in 1999. The musical was turned into a film in 2008 and Mamma Mia! on the big screen was just as successful as it was on the stage boards. But the group itself (set to be inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2010) has long since broken up, leaving fans of their ever-present music hungry for live renditions.
Cue Arrival (called after the ABBA album of the same name), the Swedish singing group whose spot-on cover show has made them the world’s most successful ABBA touring act. With a live show that features ABBA’s most famous songs including, “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance on Me”, and exact versions of original costumes (Arrival, with the permission of Owe Sandström—original creator and designer of the ABBA wardrobe—is the only touring ABBA group with access to the exact costumes), Arrival takes the ABBA experience to a level that you cannot find elsewhere.
Arrival will play the Hanover Theatre January 15, 2010. To purchase tickets ($19-$37), please visit www.thehanovertheatre.com.
