REDCAT and the Southern California Resource for Electro-Acoustic Music co-present the SCREAM Festival this year. It will take place on January 27 at 8:30 p.m. and the performance will feature the debut of the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra.

Directed by Ajay Kapur, the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra combines the trends of global music with the digital surge and new music technology of the 21st century. The orchestra is a collaboration of musicmakers, engineers, and digital artists who use custom-built robotic instruments to create a new form of live music performance. The combination of all these elements lends to a one-of-a-kind performance that marries modern engineering with musical tradition.

The orchestra’s performance includes appearances of North Indian sarodist Ustad Aashish Khan, electronic artist Curtis Bahn, Balinese gamelan master I Nyoman Wenten, vocal synthesizer Perry Cook, and innovators from the CalArts Music Technology Program, with a theatrical set designed by Michael Darling.

Darling’s sculpting and design work in combination with the engineering and robot design of Ajay Kapur are integral parts of the success of the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra. The two teach a course together at the California Institute of the Arts titled, “Robotic Design for Music and Media,” where they show students how to use scraps from the junkyard to create new interfaces for musical and media expression.

Through the course, CalArts Music Technology students Meason Wiley, Owen Vallis, Carl Burgin, Jordan Hochenbaum, and Dimitri Diakopoulos have helped shape the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra’s repertoire, building software, constructing digital instruments and helping to compose and perform pieces for the orchestra.

SCREAM Festival is funded in part through a Durfee Foundation Artists’ Resource for the Completion Grant and Subito, the quick advancement grant program of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Composers Forum.
