Nick Flynn reads new autobiography at Café 939

Nick Flynn’s stirring autobiography, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, took the literary world by storm. Once a highly praised and promising torchbearer in the world of poetry (his books Some Ether: Poems and Blind Huber: Poems were critically and financially well-received), Flynn’s own life tale became every bit as exciting. Now, Flynn has released another autobiography. The Ticking is the Bomb, in stores now, is another victory for Flynn. As much personal exploration of manhood as it is commentary on geopolitical current events, Flynn’s narrative style is as original as ever, revolving around repeated themes and image clusters. Flynn will be giving readings of The Ticking is the Bomb at The Red Room at Café 939 at Berklee College January 20, 2010 at 7:00 and 9:30 pm.
The Ticking is the Bomb was written by Nick Flynn during a soul-searching time in his life. As events (in and outside of his life) compound, Flynn weaves these varied elements into a tale of torture and choice. In 2004 Flynn was the same age that his mother had been when she had committed suicide, the same age that his father had been when he robbed his first bank, and Flynn was at the precipice of his adult romantic relationships. He was in love with two women, facing a daunting selection and pondering his future as an adult. Simultaneously, Americans were becoming aware of torture in a very real way. Photos from Abu Ghraib had been released to the public and it seemed that the societal processing of this inhumane action by the hands of human beings paralleled the inner turmoil that Flynn was experiencing. Through a journey that takes him to fatherhood and Istanbul (where he meets the men whose torture was captured in that film), Flynn proves that autobiography can be as much a cumulative cultural story as it is personal.
