Film and theatre have been intertwined since the beginning of movies. Now, at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, a simulcast of Nation will be transmitted in high definition from the UK’s National Theatre. The simulcast is the third in a four part series, “National Theatre Live”. Taking place Saturday January 30 at 2 pm, Nation is an adventure story for the ages.

Written by Terry Pratchett (His Dark Materials, Coram Boy and War Horse), Nation tells the tale of life after a shipwreck for Daphne and Mau. Set in 1860, the play sees the two teenagers tossed together after a tsunami destroys both Mau’s village and Daphne’s ship, leaving them stranded together on his South Pacific island. Coming from different worlds, the two must learn how to survive together despite language and cultural differences. As the Coolidge describes it, “Daphne delivers a baby, milks a pig, and does battle with a mutineer. Mau fights cannibal Raiders, discovers the world is round, and questions the reality of his tribe’s fiercely patriarchal gods. Together they come of age as they discard old doctrine to forge a new Nation.”

Nation has a runtime of two hours and twenty-five minutes with a twenty-minute intermission. The simulcast will air Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 2 pm and there will be an encore presentation (pre-recorded), Monday, February 15, 2010 at 2 pm.
