Quilt making is as much story telling, as it is fabric composition. With each stitch, repeated pattern and color change, the quilt maker weaves a tale. The tradition of quilt making is centuries old but alive and well, due largely to a recent resurgence. Largely considered to be the leader of the contemporary art quilting movement, Nancy Crow continues this centuries-old tradition in her current world. Opening January 30 and continuing through April 19, 2010, an exhibition of her latest works entitled Nancy Crow: Crossroads/New and Recent Quilts will be shown at the Fuller Craft Museum.

Nancy Crow, born in 1943 in Loudonville, Ohio, has been instrumental in changing the art world’s conception of quilt making. No longer considered to be merely traditional craft, quilting is increasingly recognized as an art medium. Her quilts appear in the collections of The Museum of Arts & Design and The Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian, Indianapolis Museum of Art and Miami University Art Museum in Ohio. “As an activist, teacher, and curator, Nancy Crow was a catalyst and prime mover of the art quilt movement … Today, she stands at the forefront of innovative quilt making and she is one of the premier colorists in contemporary American art, no matter what medium one surveys,” says Jean Robertson, The Smithsonian Archives of American Art.

Nancy Crow: Crossroads/New and Recent Quilts will feature thirty of Crow’s quilts. Her work is particularly exciting because each fabric strip is hand dyed and the pattern is largely improvised. Crow’s works have brought new excitement to a tradition-bound medium through technical innovation and bold improvisation.

To celebrate the opening of her exhibition, Nancy Crow will host a lecture entitled “My Life/My Life’s Work” on January 31, 2010 at 12:30 pm. The talk will highlight both her processes and what led her to Crossroads—personally and artistically. Tickets for the lecture are $10 for the public and $7 for members. There will also be a public reception from 2–5 pm January 31, 2010, which is free to the public. For more information or to purchase tickets for the lecture, please visit www.fullercraft.org.
