Almost, Maine at Seacoast
| | More
The benefit of the New England seaboard is its condensed nature—state lines do not obstructions make when it comes to entertainment. So, making the short trip to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to check out Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s Almost, Maine is not only geographically convenient, but will prove to be a perfect night of theater on a February night out.
The play, written by John Cariani, (best known for his work as an actor—most notably as Motel in the recent Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof for which he was nominated for a Tony) is a series of vignettes. Each deals with love—its inception, conclusion, and what happens along the way—as life continues in the fictional town of Almost, Maine. But it doesn’t continue as usual; on this cold Friday night, an Aurora Borealis is in the sky, causing events that are at times supernatural.
An inventive look at love, Almost, Maine leaves its audience laughing while it looks at love from a myriad of viewpoints. And although the stories and their endings change, the subject matter is consistently romantic. Almost, Maine is the sort of fodder that’s perfect for this time of year—a show that you can take your significant other to around Valentine’s Day to make them go, “Awww.” Directed by Seacoast Repertory’s Artistic Director, Craig J. Faulkner, Almost, Maine premieres February 5 and runs through February 28, 2010.
