Light and Love
Legacy of Light makes New England premiere at Lyric Stage
| | More
Legacy of Light is an ambitious production. Following the duel storylines of two women grappling with the equally weighty issues of scientific discovery and impending motherhood, Karen Zacarias’ play handles both subjects (and storylines) with a sense of quirky humor. February 12–March 13, 2010, Legacy of Light will play at The Lyric Stage Company where the staging will be directed by Lois Roach.
The first of the parallel narratives finds 17th century physicist Emilie du Châtelet on the brink of a monumental discovery and with child. At the age of 42, Emilie fears the physical toll of a pregnancy and spends her time rushing to complete her research. The second, set in the present day, finds modern day physicist Olivia working on a colossal change of her own. Married but unable to conceive a child, she enlists the help of a surrogate while sorting through the choices that she has made (and is willing to make) in a quest to become a mother.
What makes Legacy of Light really remarkable is the interwoven nature of the two stories. Many supporting actors make appearances in both time periods, making the corresponding themes all the more comparable—transitions made possible by Charles Schoonmaker’s costume design which seamlessly and deliciously takes viewers back and forth between the Enlightenment and the modern age. Legacy of Light is a wryly funny, touchingly poignant examination of the eternal quests for knowledge and love.
Legacy of Light will play at Lyrics Stage of Boston (140 Clarendon Street, Boston MA 02116 Boston, MA 02116) February 12–March 13, 2010. For tickets call (617)585-5678 or visit www.lyricstage.com.
