El Perro del Mar

El Perro del Mar’s Sarah Assbring

El Perro del Mar is a musical artist for a newly artistic age. For the first time in decades, mainstream artists are gaining popularity while concurrently branching into traditionally underground behaviors: performance art, reclusive tendencies, and subterranean inspiration. Hailing from Sweden, the one-woman band consisting of Sarah Assbring can be described as melodic electro-orchestral pop. Since the band’s 2004 initial release on Swedish label Hybris, El Perro del Mar has since branched into international performances and releases through the label Licking Fingers. This international endeavor brings her to Boston February 19, 2010. Playing at Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre, El Perro del Mar, with Taken by Trees, will let American audiences ripe with anticipation know what the underground’s response to a newly open-eared audience is.

El Perro del Mar’s Sarah Assbring is an ethereal pixie in appearance. Thin and blond, she’s the sort of beauty that given a spray tan and hair extensions might pass for any number of Hollywood ingénues. But Assbring is far too authentic—and far too talented—for that. Her latest collection of songs, Love is Not Pop, finds El Perro del Mar branching into new directions. Her influences read like the art world’s Facebook page. Edith Piaf and Nina Simone are the singers she respects most; film directors are where she finds her inspiration: John Cassavetes, David Lynch, Terrence Malick. All of these elements come together to form music that is equally effusive of a storied background and at home on pop radio.
