Vidiots, a one-of-a-kind video rental store in Santa Monica, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary, and grand opening of the Vidiots Annex, with an anniversary/grand opening party on July 10 at 8 p.m.

The celebration will include live music, a DJ and free refreshments. There will also be an opportunity to meet some of the Annex instructors and check out the new Vidiots Annex.

The Annex is an ultra modern screening room and “film school” of sorts, dedicated to film study. The Annex offers individual classes and seminars taught by film historians, critics and industry professionals. Anyone interested in film in any way, shape, or form, is encouraged to sign-up for the classes/seminars.

Classes/seminars begin on July 12 with “What is a Cult Film?” taught by writer and critic Anthony Miller on Mondays. Other classes available are “Auteurs” taught by Tom Kemper on Tuesdays, “An Introduction to Essential Film Comedy Genres” by instructor John Achorn on Wednesdays and “Censorship in Cinema,” by Tom Kemper on Thursdays.

Vidiots was created by two friends, Patty Polinger and Cathy Tauber, who had a passion for film and wanted to open a video store that contained films that they would want to watch. In 1985, they opened the store with 800 videos. Within two years of opening, Vidiots became a household name among local film students, filmmakers and film aficionados. Presently, the store contains more than 40,000 VHS and DVDs in various genres including mainstream, independent, documentary, gay and lesbian, musical, cult and TV.

Before the Annex, Vidiots was already a popular place for filmmakers, artists and aficionados to gather and discuss film. In the past, the store has hosted appearances by director Wes Craven (Red Eye), actress Angelica Huston (Choke) and director Alan Rudolph (The Secret Lives of Dentists).
