To celebrate three weeks of creative efforts, the National Choreographers Institute will hold its final performance, “Discovery,” on July 31 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Four electrifying choreographers rehearse with 16 exquisite dancers for 175 exhausting hours, culminating in one exhilarating performance.

These four new ballets are created as part of the intensive process of the National Choreographers Initiative. In her project, Director Molly Lynch invites four choreographers of note and sixteen professional dancers with promise to develop new works.

The process for the National Choreographers Initiative begins with a three-week rehearsal period that takes place in the dance studios at the University of California, Irvine. During the three weeks, each choreographer is given complete free reign to choose the style and theme of their work.

This year’s invited choreographers come from a variety of backgrounds and have proven their status as a prominent choreographer. The choreographers include: Ann Marie DeAngelo, Helen Heineman, Viktor Kabaniaev and Peter Quanz. During the culminating performance, the choreographers will talk about their concepts and ideas as well as allow audience members to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

Since its inception in 2004, 24 choreographers have participated in “Discovery.” Twelve of those works have gone on to be performed with various companies around the country and abroad.

The 7th annual National Choreographers Initiative took place this summer from July 9-30. The culminating performance is Saturday, July 31 at 8pm in the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
