REDCAT Presents Meg Wolfe ‘s and Aaron Drake’s Latest Dance Creation
Five dancers, one sound artist — one show.
That is what Meg Wolfe has created in collaboration with composer Aaron Drake for her world premier of trembler.SHIFTER at REDCAT.
Los Angeles-based choreographer Wolfe and her dancers take the audience on an emotional journey as they look deeper into the dramatic structural shifts that rule the world around us. trembler.SHIFTER is influenced by the growth of recent natural and man-made disasters and the affect these tragedies can have.
Wolfe’s choreography and Drake’s original score of live and electronic sound creates a series of extremes that range from an emotional tug of the heart strings to the gravitational pull of force. While Wolfe and her dancers execute unbelievable acts of balancing, Drake uses slide guitar, trembling cymbals, pop & classical mashings, and 75 music boxes installed throughout the theater to formulate explosive rhythms that grab the audience’s attention.
This new performance helps to deepen Wolfe and Drake’s collaboration process as they expand their creative minds.
“The way that Aaron Drake thinks about the physical experience of sound feeds into the way I think about the movement. And vice versa”, states Wolfe.
This is not the first time Wolfe and Drake have worked with one another to produce a show where music and dance are integrated together. Their prior projects include Eleven Missing Days (2008), Endurance Van (2008), Tender (2009), and Watch Her (Not Know It Now), which premiered in 2009 at REDCAT’s New Original Works Festival.
Wolfe came to Los Angeles in 2004 and has since made an incredible impact on the dance community. She is the founder and director of Show Box LA (a non-profit dance organization), publishes the LA dance journal Itch, presents ongoing training opportunities for dancers through DANCEbank classes, and is the Project Coordinator for CHIME (Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange) in Southern California.
From 1990-2004, Wolfe was originally an active member of New York City’s downtown dance scene and has performed around the world. Her choreography has been presented at Dia Center for the Arts, The Kitchen, The Living Theater, Movement Research at Judson Church, Mulberry Street Theater, Nuyorican Poets Café, the White Box Gallery, among others.
trembler.SHIFTER is performed by Wolfe and her dancers Gregory Barnett, Sarah Day, Darius Mannino and Taisha Paggett.
