L.A. Theatre Works records present five performances of Crumbs from the Table of Joy, a coming-of-age comedy by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage from December 9–13. Performances, directed by Seret Scott, will be recorded for broadcast on L.A. Theatre Works’ nationally syndicated radio theater series, which airs locally in Southern California on KPCC 89.3 every Saturday from 10 pm – midnight and can be streamed on demand at www.latw.org.

The play itself, which stars OBIE Award winner Russell Hornsby (Jitney, Eddie Sutton on ABC’s Lincoln Heights) and LADCC and NAACP Award recipient Charlayne Woodard (Pretty Fire, Neat, In Real Life), is about the troubles of the Crump family.

Set in 1950s Brooklyn, the play tells the story of recently widowed Godfrey Crump (Russell Hornsby) and his teenage daughters, Ernestine (Deidrie Henry) and Ermina (Tinashe Kajese). Crump uses religion for spiritual guidance and turns to the puritanical commandments of Father Divine. The two girls use the illusion and glamour of Hollywood to escape the racial prejudice they are faced with in Brooklyn.

When free spirited Aunt Lily (Charlayne Woodard) shows up, however, things change. Drinking, flirting and talking about communism, she is able to influence the young girls as well as their father. Godfrey remarries a white German woman (Kate Steele), while Ermina and Ernestine discover boys, bebop and the Communist Party. Nottage’s play deals with the boundaries of race, gender, and society and how they play out on the stage of 1950s Brooklyn.

The play will run for five performances at the Skirball Cultural Center, but will be broadcast on L.A. Theatre Works’ nationally syndicated radio theater series on KPCC 89.3 as well.
