Irvine Barclay and REDCAT will be presenting the Orange County and Los Angeles premieres, respectively, of Grupo de Rua’s H3, the latest work by choreographer Bruno Beltrão and his nine-member, all-male dance group. On Saturday, January 16, the group will hit the stage in Irvine and will continue its tour in Los Angeles, performing from Tuesday, January 19 to Saturday, January 23 at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater.

H3, the newest installment of this group’s repertoire is a new part of Grupo de Rua’s efforts to make a name for hip-hop as a vibrant dance theater form. The heavy beats of traditional hip-hop are replaced with a minimalist interpretation, in which the movement itself is rhythmic.

In the piece, Beltrão and his group, who all hail from the street dance scene in Rio, incormorate a crossover style that includes krumping, popping as well as breakdancing. In addition, Beltrão has included contemporary dance style into the mixture.

The set design also plays an important role in this performance, as the black mirrored stage is designed to pick up the sounds of the dancers’ shoes screeching across the space and the fluorescent lighting illuminates the dancers’ movements.

The Guardian, in London, calls Grupo de Rua’s latest work “raw 21st-century expression…extraordinarily brilliant.” The performances at the Irvine Barclay and REDCAT are two of the four performances in California along the group’s U.S. tour.
