Starting on February 14 and running through May 9, 2010, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will take a look at one of the most recognized painters of the impressionist movement and his turn to the decorative and classical form of the Great Tradition.
Renoir in the 20th Century is the first monographic study dedicated to Pierre-Auguste Renoir since the comprehensive retrospective of 1985 at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris. LACMA will offer a view of Renoir’s work through the lens of modernism, forming a bridge between the perceived divide between nineteenth and twentieth century art.
The exhibit, which is curated by LACMA curator Claudia Einecke and Chief Curator of European Art J.Patrice Marandel, presents approximately 80 paintings, sculptures, and drawings by Renoir. In addition, to illustrate the influence of Renoir’s later works, the exhibit also includes some pieces by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Aristide Maillol, and Pierre Bonnard.
“Renoir in the 20th Century is unlike any other Renoir exhibition,” says Einecke. “By focusing solely on his later works, it reveals a Renoir who is largely unknown, in a completely new and unexpected context. The juxtapositions with Picasso and his modernist peers are astonishing.”
Renoir’s late works took him to impressionism to a more decorative art, continuing in the tradityion of European painting, but modernizing the approach simultaneously. These painting and sculptures became a source of inspiration for the younger artists at the time.
Since the time he inspired these young artists with his work, Renoir’s late career has not been as widely appreciated or explored. Renoir in the 20th Century is designed to illustrate the importance and fertility of this period in Renoir’s career.
