“Is there a child anywhere who hasn’t been touched by this classic story that brings toys to life?” The South Coast Repertory flyer for The Velveteen Rabbit reads. I’ll be honest; I have never been touched by this classic story…probably because I never had the chance to read it. Nevertheless, I am sure that from March 20 to 28, many audiences will be touched by this story and the young cast acting it out, whether they have read the book or not.

The cast is comprised of the Junior Players of the South Coast Repertory, including Brooke Boukather, Rachel Charny, Chelsea Davis, Ally Hickok, William Hopper, Christopher Huntley, Jaclyn Martin, Grace O’Brien, Jamie Ostmann, Karoline Ribak, Demie Santone and Juliet Weaver.

Director Mercy Vasquez said it has been a “refreshing” to work with the young group of Junior Players on this production. “I’m thrilled to work with them,”Vasquez says, “they’re just so adorable and not at all jaded.” Vasquez directs the young cast just like she would any other cast, giving them tough notes and tough love. “I don’t hold them to a lesser standard than anybody else,” says Vasquez.

The play tells the story in the book of children’s classic by Margery Williams, adapted for the stage by Thomas Olson. Toys come to life including the horse, the bear, the clown and the rabbit itself, as young James and his toy rabbit discover that if a toy is loved for a long time, it will become real.

Find out what happens in this tale of magic and love, as the drama of the playroom comes to life, literally and figuratively. There are lessons to be learned for children and adults alike.
