Santa Ana transformed into the fashion, art and music center of Orange County on Saturday afternoon, when the third annual Rock the Runway event hit the Art Institute of California-Orange County. The fashion show itself juxtaposed the works of high-couture designers with that of student designers competing for an academic scholarship.

The fashionable event was the place to be all day, with music performances by OC’s BLOK and Denmark’s The Ravonettes preceding and concluding the show. Painters, makeup artists and hair stylists provided the cultural menu of the afternoon, while Kogi BBQ and Monster were on hand to quench the thirst and feed the hunger of models and commoners alike.

The fashion show began as eager audiences and stylish local celebs settled into their seats alongside a raised runway. An avant-garde dance performance opened the show and the stage was flocked by models almost immediately after.

Beautiful L.A. Models catwalked their way across the stage, showcasing the pieces of top designers Maggie Barry, Michael Costello, Sterling Capricio and from Andrei Savtchenko’s Dorsia Collection.

Student designers, competing for a 2,500 scholarship, were asked to create an avant-garde design based on the style of their favorite iconic fashion designer.

Rachel Anson chose Chanel and created an avant-garde re-interpretation of the Chanel suit, while Alyssia Garcia drew from Badgley Mischka, Aleece Mart was inspired by Marc Jacobs, Chelsey Pavlik took on Roberto Cavalli, Sergio Pinedo re-invented Givenchy and Jessica Pinney chose Alexander McQueen.

The winner was Daniel Magaña, whose blue satin architectural creation echoed Valentino. The 24-year-old Magaña, who also won last year’s “Rock the Runway” with his “Distrubia” piece made for Rihanna, took home the prize once again.

Judges included Dina May (stylist for “Deal or No Deal”), Luis Barajas (founder of Detour and editor of Flaunt Magazine), and Mila Hermanovski (“Project Runway” finalist).
