About Betty Boop in Ha! Ha! Ha! (1934)  •  In this self-reflexive Betty Boop short, the artist is shown drawing his characters who, in turn, affect the real world. Koko the Clown has a toothache and Boop attempts to alleviate his pain through pliers and laughing gas. The excessive use of the latter ends up getting everyone in the cartoon high past the point of “hysterics;” even the inanimate objects laugh uncontrollably. Because of the overt display of drug abuse, the short was eventually banned.
