About An Unseen Enemy (1912)  •  Before D.W. Griffith made his most famous feature, “Birth of a Nation” (1915), the filmmaker made numerous short films of which he used to craft a unique narrative style. Griffith used to be a stage actor and aspiring playwright, and although he later undermined his theatrical work, the experience remained throughout his films. Many of his films were melodramas lifted directly from the stage. “An Unseen Enemy,” for example, employs last-minute rescues—a common plot routine from the productions in which Griffith himself worked.
