Five Best…Songs Mentioning the Walkman

Sony Walkman

| | More

I’m not going to spend too much mourning the lose of the Sony Walkman (UPDATE: It’s not totally dead yet) because, a) when was the last time you saw someone using one? and b) I wasn’t part of the generation who owned them. I probably had one at some point, but as a child born in 1987, my pre-iPod memories are with a Discman. Still, I’m not above nostalgia, even nostalgia I don’t particularly have. Below are the five best songs that mention the Walkman.

#5. “Farting with the Walkman On” by Bloodhound Gang

But if you cover your ass
With the same old song
You might as well be farting
Farting with a Walkman on

#4. “Forgot about Dre” by Eminem and Dr. Dre

So what do you say to somebody you hate
Or anyone trying to bring trouble your way
Wanna resolve things in a bloodier way
Just study a tape of NWA
One day I was walkin’ by wit’ a Walkman on
When I caught a guy givin’ me an awkward eye
And strangled him off in the parkin’ lot wit his Karl Kani

#3. “Bigmouth Strikes Again” by the Smiths

And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her Roman nose
And her Walkman started to melt

#2. “Range Life” by Pavement

Out on my skateboard, the night is just hummin’
And the gum smacks are the pulse I’ll follow if my Walkman fades
But I’ve got absolutely no one, no one but myself to blame

#1. “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” by Will Smith

I begged and pleaded with her the other day
But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way
She gave me a-kissin’ and she gave me my ticket
I put my Walkman on and said, “I might as well kick it”
