Last night, we attended the New York premiere of Strange Powers, Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara’s documentary about Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields. After the screening, Kerthy, who might just be the sweetest lady in the world, introduced me to Mr. Merritt. After stumbling over my words for a moment (I mean, this is the guy who wrote 69 Love Songs and “100,000 Fireflies”!), I finally blurted out a question, “So, um, Mr. Merritt, what kind of stuff do you think you’ll be playing tomorrow?”
I was referring to tonight’s event at Other Music (15 E. 4th St.), “All Our Friends Are in New York,” featuring photographs from O’Hara and other rare Magnetic Fields-memorabilia. Merritt will also act as the evening’s DJ. After spending time with him last night, I’ll just say one thing: don’t expect too many songs by the Shaggs.
