Five Events for the Weekend

Have you heard? It’s Halloween weekend. Below are five fun things to do that might also make you pee your pants. Sorry ’bout that.

Screening of Metropolis with Alloy Orchestra
Friday, October 29
92YTribeca, 8 p.m.

This is gonna be good. A screening of Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece, Metropolis, with a live score from the Alloy Orchestra, “the best in the world at accompanying silent films,” according to Roger Ebert. Even if you’ve seen Metropolis before, you probably haven’t seen it with 25 minutes of recently restored footage, making it now only four minutes shorter than the original Berlin cut. Fun fact: Metropolis is the most expensive silent of all-time. $20/$24

Halloween Is Happening
Friday, October 29
Trinity Church and Churchyard, 4-9 p.m.

Speaking of films being screened with live music, if you can’t make it into Metropolis (or if you don’t feel like spending $20), Trinity Church is screening another masterpiece from the 1920s, one that came seven years before Metropolis: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. I watched this film for a class in college, and it scared the bejesus out of me—and I was only watching it on my laptop, not in a church with live organ music provided by Robert Ridgell…Free

Pumpkin Chucking
Saturday/Sunday, October 30/31
New York Hall of Science, 1 and 3 p.m.

And in this week’s edition of Exactly What It Sounds Like: evidently October is Catapult Month at the New York Hall of Science, and they’ve been teaching kids and adults alike how to build a catapult to launch things, Rex Banner-style. This weekend, the unfortunate victims will be pumpkins, who will be sent flying via a 20-foot tall outdoor catapult. I’m sure there’s some interesting science involved, but PUMPKINS THROWN FROM A 20-FOOT CATAPULT!!! $8-$11

Merchant’s House Museum

Just a short walk away from Washington Square Park is a house that’s been preserved—since the 19th century. You won’t find any TVs or phones here; everything on both the inside and outside is exactly how it was in the 1800s, when a prosperous merchant family lived there. The house can be viewed until November 29, but let’s face it: creepy old homes are creepier around Halloween than Thanksgiving. Plus, this weekend, tour guides will take you on a candlelight three-floor stroll through the house, discussing the freaky things they’ve seen and heard. $25

Oh! You Pretty Things: The Rocky Horror Picture Show 35th Anniversary Bash
Sunday, October 31
(Le) Poisson Rouge, 9 p.m.

This event will be a good indication of how much Glee has affected pop culture. If there are an abundance of 13 years old…well, let’s just hope there aren’t because that’d be weird, especially with burlesque (from Anna Evans), gothic rock (from Kayvon Zand) and cabaret (The Flying Fox and Doug Sakmann) performances, not to mention a latex fashion show by Renee Masoomian. Oh yeah, and the actual film itself, which isn’t very kid friendly, especially live performances, which are amazing, but the world “slut” might be said too many times for Lil’ Johnny’s ears. $20/$25
