MoMA PS1 and The Museum of Modern Art are presenting the third ordination of The Greater New York Exhibit. It celebrates the city that never sleeps by featuring works of more than 50 local talented artists. These artists were selected through recommendations, reviews and a few were even chosen from a website where New York based artists are invited to submit their works. MoMA PS1 is dedicating its entire building to the event. The First Floor Painting Gallery houses The 5 Year Review. It takes visitors back in time by displaying videos, installation views of other exhibits and even movie posters that have taken place in New York or at least have had a big effect in New York within the past 5 years. Also in the room is a giant screen displaying a slideshow of local artists in the middle of creative thought process. In the adjacent Drawing Gallery, the Rotating Gallery is in view. It houses a series of exhibitions organized by four local curators – Olivia Shao, Kate Fowle Cecilia Alemani and Clarissa Dairymple. The exhibit also concentrates on the different type of materials and processes the artists used to work on their pieces.

One of the interesting portrayals of life in New York is ‘Lost Tribes and Promised’ by artist Elisabeth Subrin. It is a silent video that documented the same New York block from October 13, 2001 to October 11, 2008. The artist gives the audience a front seat look at the physical transformations that occurred within the past seven years. Another work that stood out to me was by Debo Eilers. The piece is rightfully titled ‘Twitterific’ – it is a done using mixed media and it has a blue bird in the middle of the orange plastic looking frame. Surrounding the bird are colorful squares. The color pattern of the squares makes them seem interconnected within the frame. It reminds me of how New Yorkers have played a big part in the boom of social sites like Twitter.

Another reason why The Greater New York Exhibit is special is because it encourages local artists to make MoMA PS 1 their personal studio. Throughout the exhibit they are given the opportunity and plenty of space to put their creativity to work. They are invited to paint, sketch, sculpt, take photographs, and make videos. They are pretty much free to do whatever they feel like doing artistically. The Greater New York Exhibit runs from May 23 to October 18 at MoMA PS1. If you appreciate contemporary art and if you love NYC, this exhibit is definitely something to check out.
