Two years ago tonight, Bob Dylan performed at the University of Minnesota, his alma matter (sort of), for the first time ever. The occasion? Barack Obama would soon become President of the United States. Author Greil Marcus uses this moment as the finale for his new book, Bob Dylan: Writings 1968-2010, a collection of articles that Marcus has written about Robert Zimmerman. In it, there are writings about Self-Portrait, Time Out of Mind and every album in-between. I once had a class with Marcus as a professor at The New School, and it’s a genuine privilege to hear him talk about Dylan, the Band, “the Old, Weird America,” Van Morrison and whatever else he feels like discussing.
Tonight, he’ll be speaking at Spoonbill & Sugartown, Booksellers at 8 p.m. The event is free, but get there early. For more information, please click here.
