Fans from the five boroughs and tri-state area flocked the Lower East Side’s Mercury Lounge on November 1 for the overdue New York City Eve 6 comeback show. As bassist/vocalist Max Collins mentioned in an interview with Encore last week, their appearance on Monday was their first gig in NYC with guitarist Matt Bair.
Fans packed 217 Houston Street expecting to hear their favorites such as “Showerhead,” “Open Road Song,” “Sunset Strip Bitch,” “At Least We’re Dreaming” and “Superhero Girl,” but what they got was an “unapologetic” display of Eve 6’s new music. Don’t get me wrong—the new material is just as lyric driven as the older material, but considering it was the band’s first NYC show in years, the crowd wanted to be completely absorbed with nostalgia and rock out like they did back in junior high. Perhaps it was the way the set list was organized that didn’t quite grasp the crowd’s expectations.
The show opened with “Rescue,” their typical intro—and they way it should always be. It never fails to get the crowd pumped and ready to rock. It was during the fifth song, “Little Tiny Everything,” when the crowd’s energy and excitement took a temporary dive, even more so after Collins made his statement of being unapologetic about playing new material. Eve 6 managed to pick up the vibe with “On the Roof Again,” and that was when the crowd really let lose. Sadly, it was a short show and people felt like it was a tease.
