Like all great events in history, Lebowski Fest began at a tattoo expo—in Louisville, Kentucky. Founders Scott and Will weren’t having much luck selling t-shirts for Scott’s store, so to amuse themselves, they started quoting lines from The Big Lebowski, Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1998 then failure/now cult classic film.

The other surrounding vendors began to join, too, “creating a sense of bonding and camaraderie between complete strangers,” according to their website, and it where here that the idea for Lebowski Fest came to be. The first one took place in Louisville (the same weekend as the tatoo expo?) in 2002, and eight years later, the celebration for all things Dude have been held in Seattle, Las Vegas, Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago and, now, New York.

Tonight at Brooklyn Bowl (where else?), lovers of White Russians, Donny, “The Man in Me” and Tara Reid (well, maybe not so much Tara Reid) will dress up, see a screening of the film, listen to the music of Diamondsnake (composed of comedian Dave Hill and Moby) and bowl.

I’m personally hope they’ll show the censored network used for TV, where Walter saying, “This is what happens when you f*ck a stranger in the ass!” is changed to “This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!” Now, isn’t that just fun for the whole family?

Tickets for Lebowski Fest are sold out, but keep checking with Brooklyn Bowl’s website/call the box office.
