Expressions of Peace
Sachiyo Ito and Company’s performance Poetry In Motion
| | More
Drawing from different disciplines, Sachiyo Ito transcends time, place of origin, and disparate styles to create an innovative collaboration in her new production Poetry In Motion. The performance blends dance, music, poetry and spoken word to express a single goal of inner peace. A member of The Community Of Mindfulness, Ito applies her skills and understanding of dance to express Thich Nhat Hanh’s voice of humanism. Ito’s body of work focuses on a peace from within that connects with a global awareness, and she continues to work on this theme as there is little change around her.
Her performances bring a social awareness to the viewer with tranquility. Her style is not to alarm but enlighten, hoping to bring both understanding and happiness to her audience. Although the performance is spiritual and has connections to Buddhism, Ito works to connect with those of varying backgrounds and beliefs. The ensemble piece Only Breath incorporates different ethnic dances including east Indian Ballet with gypsy influences.
The performance revives her earlier dances, Please Call Me by My True Name, based on a poem of the same name by Thich Nhat Hahn and Cheiko: The Element, a choreography to the modern Japanese poem, Cheiko-sho. The performance includes additional poems and an array of guest singers. Just as her message reaches those of vast differences, this performance appeals to lovers of music, poetry, dance and word.
The performances, which run from Thursday June 10th 2010 to Saturday the 12th, all at 8 p.m., are located at Joyce SoHo, 155 Mercer Street. Additional information and ticket purchases can be found at www.joyce.com
