Tears of Rage If You Miss Raging Bull

One of my favorite facts about Raging Bull is that in the famous “hit me” scene—where Robert De Niro’s Jake LaMotta is asking his kid brother, Joey, played by Joe Pesci, to, well, hit him in the face—supposedly, Pesci and De Niro are actually hitting each other. Maybe it’s just an urban myth, but I choose to believe it, because it perfectly sums up the kind of film Raging Bull is. It’s ugly (in a stylized way, of course, thanks to Marty Scorsese), realistic, funny and occasionally hard to watch. It’s also one of the greatest films of all-time, and, with all due respect to Rocky, the greatest boxing film ever.

It’s also celebrating its 30th anniversary and playing at the Film Forum, in a new 35mm print. The film leaves the ring, so to speak, on Thursday, November 11, so get your tickets now.
