This week, three of New York’s foremost performing arts institutions, La MaMa, the Baryshnikov Arts Center and Performance Space 122 collaborate and present choreographer Pavel Zuštiak’s trilogy The Painted Bird.

Part I, Bastard, premieres at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre. Then, the Baryshnikov Arts Center will present Part II in June 2011, and Performance Space 122 will offer Part III in September 2011.

The Painted Bird is loosely inspired by Jerzy Kosinski’s novel of the same name, set in wartime Eastern Europe. To the trilogy, Zuštiak brings his signature approach of integrating multiple mediums with dance to create richly layered, experiential performance works.

Bastard, Part I of the trilogy, draws upon the Kosinski novel’s signature scene, in which a wandering boy witnesses the painting of a bird in brilliant colors, causing it later to be violently killed by its own flock for being an imposter. A solo performance by award-winning Slovak dancer Jaro Viňarský, Bastard features original live music by Christian Frederickson, a founding member of the alternative indie-rock band Rachel’s.
