Michael Sládek’s Con Artist is an energetic docu-comedy about notorious “business artist” and bizarre court jester Mark Kostabi, whose outrageous addiction to fame and fortune made him equally successful and reviled.

Wanting to join Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and other talents within the exploding East Village art scene of the ’80s, painter Mark Kostabi rocketed to fame via a Warhol-inspired gimmick. Declaring that “Modern Art is a con, and I am the world’s greatest con artist,” Kostabi mass-produced, signed and sold thousands of paintings, conceived of himself but executed by a revolving stable of hired hands. His industry lampoon made him wealthy and landed him on Oprah, Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous and 60 Minutes, but his overt antagonism led to bankruptcy and a remarkable fall from grace.

Con Artist is showing at reRun, Brooklyn’s reBar’s new independent movie theater – located just down the hall from the restaurant. Featuring 60 reclaimed car seats, a full bar and gourmet snack counter, and a twelve foot screen, reRun offers just the kind of intimate art-house theater experience you’d expect from the creators of funky gastropub reBar.
