Isle of Indie Dance
Yeasayer at Governor’s Island
| | More
With just a four minute ferry ride from the southern tip of Manhattan you can get to a slab of New York City real estate that rests relatively unscathed by developers, tourists or hipsters. No, we’re not speaking of the grand Isle of Staten, which share many of the same traits – it is your very own piece of New York City property, Governors Island. On the first of April in 2002 the Mayor, the Governor and the President announced the sale of the island to “the people of New York City” for the price of 1$. Since that time the land previously occupied by the military and Coast Guard has been revamped to welcome nature lovers, bikers, and concert-goers. One of the highlights of the activities that take place on Governor’s Island has been the concerts at The Beach.
The Beach is a sandy outdoor venue located within walking distance from the island’s docks. This year The Beach is partnering with three of the cities top promoters, The Highline Ballroom, The Bowery Presents and Mad Dog Presents, to keep fresh acts ferrying out to the island. The Beach is hosting local indie rock favorites, Yeasayer, for a free concert the day the Island officially opens for summer tourism, June 5th.
All one needs to do to cloister off to this archipelagic, indie dance extravaganza is show up for the water taxi that takes off from the Battery Maritime Museum. The Beach invites us to come early at 10am, to explore the island, gain some sense of history, and see what’s to come of one of NYC’s most exciting park projects. Yeasayer is slated to start at 8PM.
