Magnus Lindberg writes Souvenir as a remembrance of Gérard Grisey
NY Phil’s Contact
Magnus Lindberg is in his second season as The Composer-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic. In this position, he is writing music for the Philharmonic and serving in a curatorial role for CONTACT!, the Orchestra’s new-music series.
Magnus Lindberg worked with Gérard Grisey in Paris in the early 1980’s, and Souvenir was written as a remembrance of him.
“In Souvenir I was trying to create a sort of ambiguity, with material that behaves gesturally but then also behaves texturally. I’ve liked working with strong, almost jingle-like thematic approaches, where just a couple of notes sets up something directly recognizable that the listener can identify,” explains Mr. Lindberg.
He further explains, “The set-up of the three movements is unusual: it’s not classical, with fast, then slow, then fast. The first movement is like a whirlpool where things are moving together quickly. The second sets out like a slow movement, but it has a bubbling surface, with a lot of details. Then the third movement is a fast, direct, more toccata-like conclusion.”
