Ongoing at The Museum of the City of New York is their latest exhibit, Notorious and Notable: 20th Century Women of Style, highlighting 80 prominent New York women who used their style, talent, or wealth to capture the attention of society and the media.

This weekend pianist and vocalist Jo Thompson celebrates her friend and musical contemporary Lena Horne at the museum. They met when both women were booked at Jack Goldman’s Clover Club in Miami in 1953.

Brooklyn-born Lena Horne got her start in show business singing jazz at the famed Cotton Club in 1933 and later touring the American and European nightclub circuits.

I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.
