Elizabeth Strout was born in Maine and was raised in small towns around the Northeast. She graduated from Bates College.

After moving to New York City, she wrote stories that were published in magazines, including Redbook and Seventeen. It took her almost seven years to write Amy and Isabelle, which was nominated for the 2000 PEN/Faulkner Award.

In 2009 Strout was honored with a Pulitzer Prize for Olive Kitteridge, a collection of connected short stories about a woman and her immediate family and friends on the coast of Maine.

Did you know? Strout is the first American to win the Italian Premio Bancarella award for Olive Kitteridge, since Ernest Hemmingway.
