If there was a quintessential record that transformed Charlie Parker to a pop superstar was his 1949 recording, Charlie Parker With Strings!

Despite struggling with a severe drug problem, Parker became the first jazz musician to record with a string ensemble. Recording with him on the album included, Mitch Miller-oboe; Max Hollander-violin; Buddy Rich-drums; Jimmy Carroll-arranger and conductor, to name a few.

Kicking off this Friday, for 2 nights only, Lincoln Center Jazz will be performing songs from Parker’s infamous album. Classic pop standards will include, Just Friends and April In Paris.  The concert will feature alto saxophonists Charles McPherson and Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, with trombonist/Music Director Vincent Gardner. The first half of the show will be performed in a sextet setting. The second half will feature members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas.

Additional artists will include: Ryan Kisor (trumpet), Ehud Asherie (piano), Ben Wolfe (bass), and Victor Lewis (drums).

The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA) is an an international symphony orchestra founded in 2004 by then-23 year old Mexican conductor, Alondra de la Parra. It serves as a platform to showcase young composers and performers from the Americas. It showcases the next generation of young composers and performers. The The majority are under age 35 and hail from 22 different countries.
