Week two, June 2-8, of the 2011 La Mama Moves! Festival starts off with a bang. Five different groups perform over the 6-day period, each with their own unique choreography to keep their audience enticed throughout the show.

The first group of performers comes from New York University. The NYU Collaboration Project features eight young choreographers who are recent graduates of the university. The evening will include dances that were created over the past year and two premiers, all representing the new and exciting work that the Tisch Dance Program at NYU has produced. This year the choreographers will be MFA graduates, Claudia Hubiak and Igor Konyukhov, and BFA graduates, Allie Pfeffer, Casey Boyle, Phoebe Rose Sanford, Russell Stuart Lillie, and Brighid Greene. (This show is June 2-3 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre at 7:30 p.m.)

The next performance comes from Lance Gries whose own choreography has won praise from critics. This new performance is Gries’s first show in New York in ten years. “Etudes for an Astronaut” is a solo performed by and created by Gries. It is the search of one man’s place in the universe. It is about big dreams, little steps forward and poetic attempts to try and unify the body, mind, and spirit. The performance displays the obstacles and hardships experienced in life and the peace that is made in between. (This show is June 3-4 at The Club at 10 p.m.)

Love, hatred, passion, lust, and revenge—these emotions are brought out by the next performance at the La Mama Moves! Festival. Austin McCormick/Company XIV presents “Dénouement-A Murderous Masquerade,” a dance drama that takes place at a party which includes Russian Roulette as part of the fun. This performance is based on a rich society that is so bored with itself, it looks to murder to spice things up and escape from its mundane lifestyle. (This show is June 4-5 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre at 7:30 p.m.)

The next day of performance comes from the New York International. This lineup includes Anagrama Coreografico (Italy), Sonoko Kawahara/Crossing Jamaica Avenue (Japan/USA), Erick Montes (Mexico), John-Mario Sevilla (Philippines), Luke Murphy (Ireland), Nicole Vivien Watson/ Surface Area Dance Theatre (England). (This show is June 5 at The Club at 5:30 p.m.)

The last day of week two of the La Mama Moves! Festival brings a new flavor to the festival. This performance, the Israeli/New York Festival, will feature a variety of dance troupes lead by either Israeli-based companies or New York-based Israeli expats. Isaraeli choreographer Arkadi Zaides premiers “Quiet” and Netta Yerushalmy debuts “Devouring, Devouring” in the U.S. A series of short animated video dance films, created at Dimension Three (a contemporary Tel Aviv-based art lab) will be woven between the live performances. (This show is June 8 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre at 7:30 p.m.)
