‘Fearless’ Joe
Saxophonist Joe Lovano and Ensemble Performs In Big Apple
Joe Lovano, a world-famous legend of jazz music, is coming to perform for audience members at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and showcase his talent on the tenor saxophone.
The jazz artist will play in New York City for six days, beginning Tuesday, along with his nine-piece ensemble, the Joe Lovano Nonet. This combination enables him to also display his strong talent for musical composition. Among his fellow Nonet musicians will be Lewis Nash on drums; Barry Ries on trumpet; James Weidman on piano; and Cameron Brown on bass.
While Lovano is known for his skill with the tenor saxophone, he hasn’t limited himself to only one instrument, and enjoys experimenting with playing gongs and the saxophone without other musical accompaniment. He also plays with a variety of musical ensembles from duets to quintets to his Wind Ensemble, “all reflecting his searching and dynamic personality.”
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Lovano now lives in the Hudson River Valley. He began his musical education at the age of five when he learned to play the alto saxophone. A few years later, he changed to the tenor saxophone, following in the footsteps of his father and brothers. He has recorded pieces for more than 25 music albums. Lovano also was part of Woody Herman’s 40th Anniversary tour in 1976 and played with him for three years, during which time he traveled to Europe and began performing solo at major international music festivals. His travels overseas gave him material for his newest piece, “Shimmers of Light,” which consists of 10 movements and was inspired by his walks along the Seine River in Paris. He recently gave a premiere performance with his Street Band octet, whose instruments also include strings and woodwinds for a unique twist on the typical jazz sounds.
Lovano continues to perform abroad. He will be playing at the Estoril Jazz Festival in Estoril, Portugal, just two days prior to his shows in New York.
“The secret to Joe Lovano’s success is his fearless ability to challenge and push the conceptual and thematic choices he makes in a quest for new modes of artistic expression, further defining the Jazz idiom.”
