Death Takes a Holiday
Roundabout Theatre Presents New Musical
It is said that nothing is more beautiful than life, also that nothing is more unappreciated. Roundabout Theatre Company is pleased to address this inherent human predicament with the full company of the new musical Death Takes A Holiday, based on the dramatic play by Alberto Casella, rewritten for the American stage by Walter Ferris, and originally produced by Messrs. Shubert.
One would think that Death, played by Julian Ovenden, would understand the fickleness of life the best. However, Death has become uninspired by the constant feelings of fear that people have towards him and wants to understand, in a sense, what the big deal is. By posing as a Prince named Sirki and vacationing in the Italian Alps, Death takes on human life form to endure the heartbreak and emotional battles of mortals; he does not belong to his usual world of removing souls for three whole days. The Prince has just this short time to learn why he is so feared by the human race and for those days’ lives among them, experiences, and takes in all he can of human ways. Through his own journey, we get to see life in the eyes of a newcomer.
The women of the town are quite intrigued by this new mysterious man who suddenly sweeps into the town with a presence that is understandably unable to be ignored. Only one brave soul is not afraid of the Prince of Death, but embraces him. He ends up finding much more than life, he finds love with the woman who truly knows how to live without fear, prejudice, or judgment. This woman, Grazia Lambert, in return felt what no woman ever felt before and had a lover that no woman had ever had. With dreams, moonlight rambling, and sweet nothings, Prince Sirki romances with the eagerness of a man just discovering love. Captured with emotion, both fear and love, Grazia, played by Jill Paice, begs us to look at our own life through the perspective of this character who learns that life and it’s delicately morbid struggle is so beautiful exactly the way it is. We ask ourselves, can we still find beauty in love which lives far beyond the shadow of Death, which follows us all?
Death Takes a Holiday is truly a masterpiece of mood, the perfect blend of subject matter and atmosphere. Directed by Tony® winner Doug Hughes, this soaring tale of love is adapted by Tony winning writers Peter Stone and Thomas Meehan, and features lush, romantic songs by Tony winner Maury Yeston.
