Tze Chun Dance Company Presents Premiere Dance Performance

On June 16 and 17, the premiere of Tze Chun Dance Company’s TAKEN will take place in at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Using dance, the performance looks at what we learn from our experiences that we hold on to for our entire lives. A suitcase is used to represent “a point of departure,” which is part of the transport theme seen throughout the show. The dancers draw on their own experiences to add detail and imagery to the show.
TAKEN is original scored by Richard Vagnino and choreographed by Tze Chun. The performers are Tony Bordonaro, Elisa Davis, Adi Kfir and Tim Ward. Chun is also the Artistic Director of the Tze Chun Dance Company (TCDC). She uses her background in martial arts, dance and visual arts to develop unique dances and multi-media projects.
The dance company creates and performs modern dance pieces, “site-specific performances and multi-media projects.” Tze Chun Dance Company has presented work across New York from The Flea Theater to the Cunningham Studio to the Dance New Amsterdam.
For a year, TCDC was in residence at Tribeca Performing Arts Center developing TAKEN as part of Tribeca PAC’S Artists in Residence (AIR) program. For 15 seasons the program has helped emerging theater writers, directors, choreographers and composers to create new work over a period of a year. This allows these theater artists to be supported during the start of their careers or allows already established theater artists to move into new and different roles while developing new work. AIR is funded by the Fund for Creative Communities and the current season is sponsored partly by the New York City Department of Culture Affairs and by individuals. It is also supported by the New York State Council on the Arts.
TAKEN is just one of six other AIR performances taken place this spring. Other performances include: Devouring Devouring, PD & Friends: Face the Music, Mister Benn – A Femoir and The Chemistry of Lime Trees. TAKEN is the second to last AIR performance this season. The last performance will be The Giver of Light.
