A Case of the Texas Blues
Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents Jimmie Vaughan and friends.
ATTENTION ALL TEXAS BLUES ENTHUSIASTS! Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts the Texas Blues Summit featuring Jimmie Vaughan, W.C. Clark, Lou Ann Barton, Billy Gibbons and more. The names in the line-up speak for themselves.
Since its inception, Jazz at Lincoln Center has maintained an untouchable reputation. So when the first annual Blues Summit was announced last spring, jazz and blues fans all over New York City were brimmed with excitement. Last year’s show developed around the legendary harmonica playing of James Cotton, with performances by other blues legends like the late great blues pianist Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Taj Mahal and Shemekia Copeland. Needless to say, the audience did not leave with anything less than spectacular memories. In fact, the show was so successful that the obvious next step was to prepare a second round that could at least live up to the expectations set by the first. This year, the Blues Summit is back with a vengeance, and this time, it’s Texas-themed!
Perhaps the most special aspect of the show is the way that it brings together two generations of Texas blues. Texas blues has a unique heritage – it’s a blend of country, Cajun zydeco and blues with an attitude. It’s a style that is self-sustaining, yet unlike any other style of music, it has grown in popularity and spread beyond the state of Texas. And still, musicians from Texas feel a special pride from being from the state and follow a long list of musicians who captured the world with their blend and unique style, such as T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, Lighting Hopkins, Stevie Ray Vaughan and others. The Texas Blues Summit is an opportunity for musicians who share a common heritage to come together and share their work with a new audience.
If you’re not familiar with the names on the program – Jimmie Vaughan, W.C. Clark, Lou Ann Barton, Billy Gibbons, etc. – you probably should be. The show features some amazing artists: Jimmie Vaughan has won 4 Grammys. W.C. Clark, provided Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Lou Ann Barton (who was an original member of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s band Double Trouble) with their start in the music business. Billy Gibbons is easily recognizable as the bearded lead guitarist of the band ZZ Top.
So if you’re not a lover of blues, this is the perfect opportunity to expand your horizons. The Texas Blues Summit is an amazing opportunity to see musicians who have dedicated their lives to playing the music that they love, something respectable by anyone’s standards. Jimmie Vaughan is considered one of the greatest guitarist alive today, and together the performers are dedicated to the heritage of the blues and the future of the blues.
