New York City-based Rooftop Films brings you movies that are outside of the box—and outside of the building.  The non-profit started in 1997 when filmmaker Mark Rosenberg took to his apartment’s rooftop with a camera, a sheet and independently-created short films, screening original pictures by filmmakers in outdoor settings.

Ever since the original event 14 years ago, Rooftop Films has been showing movies submitted by independent filmmakers in outdoors spaces around New York City and its surrounding boroughs. As the weather turns warmer and summer months approach, Rooftop Films begins their annual Summer Series: a three-month long summer film festival. This year, the Summer Series had already begun mid-May and it will run through August 15.

As if this experience wasn’t unique enough, Rooftop Films has been working for years on integrating music into the showing of their films, by adding films accompanied by live music.  Most screenings even include a chance for audience members to pick the brains of the films creators with Q&A sessions following the screening.  And for those reasons, Rooftop Films brings you a movie experience like no other.

Rooftop Films partnered with the Independent Film Channel, and this summer on Thursday June 23rd, the non-profit will work with IFC in the screening of Home Movies and Commercials Kings. This particular screening will show a compilation of seven short films examining the concepts of home movies and one’s family and past.  The films will end with a sneak preview of the new IFC show Commercial Kings, a docu-comedy series starring filmmakers and comedians Rhett McLaughin and Link Neal as they travel across America creating commercials for local businesses.

But the fun doesn’t stop there.  Rooftop Films’ Summer Series will feature over 150 different films including a documentary on signer Jose Gonzalez, whose work has been featured in many television shows, along with a pre-screening performance by the artist himself.  The Summer Series will also feature films from a variety of genres, including documentaries, comedies, dramas and animations.  While some screenings are free, most charge around $10, with some averaging a slightly higher price.  For those who are looking for a movie experience that is somewhat out of the box, Rooftop Films may be your perfect ticket.  Outdoor spaces, live music, question-and-answer sessions with the creators and new and original movies.  Or, as Rooftop Films would say: “We bring underground movies outdoors.”  You’ve never seen movies like this before.
