Madeleine Peyroux
At Blue Note Jazz Festival
Madeleine Peyroux’s style has been compared to many of the greatest jazz artists in the world, this includes Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams or Elliot Smith. However, she has forged her own way through the rich history of jazz and has come out on the other side with her own style, her own place in that world. Born in 1974, Peyroux is an American singer and songwriter, but grew up playing on the streets of Europe. Drama and rustic beauty of the surroundings is still easily heard through the music. In fact, on an international standpoint, she is recognized and appreciated through winning the Best International Jazz Artist at the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards. A true combination of what is modern jazz and what is early blues and jazz, she embodies an artist that understands where she comes from and also what is to come next.
French streets and remarkable inspiration give the music an interesting element, but she still has American style coursing throughout. She has kept broadening her musical talent, embracing the organic, American roots sound which she is known for. While Peyroux has taken much of 2010 off from touring in order to compose, she is now ready to step back out towards performing and sharing her gift. Obviously losing none of her compelling ability, her soul is shown through intricately nuanced vocal shadings. While she is most known for her 2005 release ‘Careless Love,’ Peyroux’s smoky voice and laid back delivery makes each song her own, whether she’s singing vintage, contemporary songs, or personally written pieces. By combining acoustic blues, country ballads, classic jazz, torch songs and pop into a vibrant fabric that is both timeless and thoroughly up to date, Peyroux’s arresting vocals are always dramatic and entrancing.
The Highline Ballroom is proud to present Madeleine Peyroux along with other stellar performing jazz artists in The Blue Note Jazz Festival. This year marks its 30th anniversary of the festival and this celebration is not one to be missed. For the entire month of June, NYC opens its doors to the best jazz musicians in the world. These artists, which include too many hard hitting, award winning artists to name, are all coming together to celebrate what makes jazz one of the most beloved, soul full, and historic music genres to date.
