With roots from Miles Davis, it is no surprise that Kenny Garrett is one of the foremost jazz (and post bop saxophonists) since the late seventy, and his streak of raw talent, versatile and unique compositions, and success and immense adoration in the world of jazz and post bop is still as intense as ever.

The quartets’ origin is rooted in Garrett’s not so humble beginnings as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the leadership of Mercer Ellington in the late seventies. He went on to record his first album as an altoist (and bandleader) in 1984 with Introducing Kenny Garrett and the modest age of twenty-four. It was after this that he soared up to perform and be associated with jazz legends of the likes of Miles Davis and Art Blakey. As he continued to evolve in various sub-genres of jazz, he grew into an artist of his own right, and began to carve out his own unique path in the world of jazz, by creating his own style of music within the multiple genres he seamlessly traverses.

He mesmerizes the soul with his mellow, soulful compositions such as Left Alone and, yet just as easily forces out your inner dancer with compositions such as Jean Pierre and Ja-Hed. He does this while managing to give each of his pieces a distinct attitude, with Inner City Blues possessing a unique swagger of its own. His quartet combines pure artistry with individualism, and the common goal of performing from the soul, a combination which yields music which is as beautiful to the mind as it is to the ears.

His collaboration with current jazz/post bop greats: John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Brian Blade (or Vinnie Colaiuta), and  Chick Corea, as the Five Piece Band, produced a successful tour for the dream quintet from 2008-2009, and it was suitably topped off with a Grammy win for their album Five Peace Band – Live early last year.
